This technique of weaving with shreds of old sarees, called khesh started at shilpa sadan in early 1920's. Khesh weaving is a tradition which has been practised for couple of years now. The weaving technique essentially onvolves tearing old sarees into thin strips-the warp has the new thread and the weft uses the thin strip of saree. The weavers collect cotton sarees and it is the women who patiently tear the sari into multiple long strips. It is upto weaver to match the warp with the weft and crate design. Khesh along with combination of handblock printing and kantha embroidery results in fabrics that exude artistic elegance, cultural richness, and a timeless appeal, making block printing-Kantha a prized textile admired for its beauty and artisanal craftsmanship.
