Why cloth became a weapon in 1921

In 1921, Gandhi asked Indians to do something that sounds almost too simple: make their own cloth. The logic was ruthless. British Lancashire mills bought Indian cotton cheap, wove it in England, and sold it back to India at a markup. Every yard of imported cloth was a transfer of wealth out of the country and a weaver put out of work at home. Spinning your own thread wasn't symbolic — it was an economic boycott with a spinning wheel for a logo.

Khadi became the uniform of that idea. Handspun, handwoven, deliberately imperfect. It was worn by lawyers who had trained in London and by farmers who had never left their district, and it flattened the difference between them. The charkha eventually made it onto the flag of the Indian National Congress.

The loom was never just a machine. It was proof that a country could clothe itself.

Keeping whites white

White handloom is not high-maintenance — it's just specific. Four rules cover almost everything:

1. Cold water, mild detergent, separately. Handloom cotton releases a little dye and lint in early washes. Wash whites alone for the first three cycles. Never bleach — it weakens the fibre and turns handloom cotton yellow over time, not whiter.

2. Dry in shade. Direct August sun on wet white cotton causes the exact yellowing you're trying to avoid. Shade, inside out, flat if possible.

3. Starch, then iron damp. A light starch and a hot iron while the fabric is still slightly damp is what gives whites that crisp, photograph-ready finish. This is the single biggest difference between "handloom" and "handloom, but sharp."

4. Fold, don't hang. Store folded with a muslin cloth between layers. Hangers stretch shoulders on soft handloom over time. For Jamdani especially, folding preserves the woven motifs.
