Diwali Outfits When You Don't Want to Wear a Saree: Dhoti Sets, Kaftans and Jamdani Dresses

Both hands free, no safety pins. Five handloom swaps that look dressed up from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, November 8. A saree is lovely until you are answering the door, rescuing snacks from the kitchen and chasing a toddler away from the diyas. When the cloth carries the craft, in hand-inlaid Jamdani, Khesh or Mul, a dhoti set, kaftan co-ord or tiered dress looks festive with zero pleating. Here are five swaps from our XS to 6XL handloom collections.

FIND YOUR LOOK

1. The pre-stitched drape — dhoti and kaftan-jacket set

2. For the non-stop host — the graded kaftan co-ord set

3. One-piece festive volume — the Jamdani three-tier flare dress

4. For Dhanteras and Bhai Dooj lunches — panelled A-line dress with a Bindi dupatta

5. For cooler evenings and diaspora pujas — the dress-and-jacket set

1. THE PRE-STITCHED DRAPE — DHOTI AND KAFTAN-JACKET SET

You get the drape of a saree with the freedom of trousers. Wear the kaftan open like a jacket over the Mul dhoti and you can sit cross-legged for aarti, then stand up with nothing to fix. Finish with a silver collar necklace and metallic mojaris.

2. FOR THE NON-STOP HOST — THE GRADED KAFTAN CO-ORD SET

Six hours on your feet calls for a kaftan that skims without clinging. Each Prathaa kaftan is graded from XS to 6XL, so the shoulder seam and sleeve length sit where they should. With bare wrists, stack glass or oxidised silver bangles.

3. ONE-PIECE FESTIVE VOLUME — THE JAMDANI THREE-TIER FLARE DRESS

Cotton can look plain only if the cloth is flat. In Jamdani, artisans inlay each motif by hand, which gives the dress a raised texture that holds its own on Diwali night. Ruby red suits the occasion. Skip the necklace and wear heavy jhumkas.

Look 03 · The Jamdani three-tier flare dress

4. FOR DHANTERAS AND BHAI DOOJ LUNCHES — PANELLED A-LINE DRESS WITH A BINDI DUPATTA

Daytime celebrations call for something lighter. A panelled A-line dress with a contrast Bindi dupatta gives you the traditional drape for the puja, and you can fold it away when lunch is served. Try white with the pastel yellow dupatta, and tan kolhapuris.

Look 04 · Panelled A-line dress with a Bindi dupatta

5. FOR COOLER EVENINGS AND DIASPORA PUJAS — THE DRESS-AND-JACKET SET

If November evenings are crisp, or you are dressing for a Diwali dinner abroad, a handloom jacket keeps your arms warm and looks deliberate, unlike a cardigan over a saree. Wear it closed for the commute, then open it indoors over a long silver chain.

Look 05 · The dress-and-jacket set

Handloom Cotton Asymmetrical Hiji Biji Reversible Jacket from Prathaa, Look 05

HANDLOOM COTTON · JACKET

COMFORT IS NOT A COMPROMISE HERE

Dhoti pants and co-ord trousers have waistbands made for sitting and dining, and tops and dresses are graded by bust and shoulder from XS to 6XL. Check the size chart and if you like a looser drape on the upper arms, go one size up. Sizes above XXL use more handwoven fabric, so the price for your size shows on the product page once you select it. To care for your pieces, hand wash cold, dry flat in the shade and iron on the reverse while damp.
