Originating in Rajasthan, Block printing is a technique that begins with the artisan carving wooden blocks to a desired motif or pattern. In intricate designs more block prints are carved of each shape. The set of block prints required of each shape depends on the colour variation. The motifs are then dipped in dyes to give life to beautiful prints on the fabric. The base fabric ranges from soft muls, cottons to handspun handwoven fabrics.

The Block print artisans in the villages are skilled, most of them being born into families that have been acquainted with the process 6 generations before.

Each region in India has a different method of bringing about prints on the fabric, sometimes the process differs even village to village.
